THE MUSIC OF BOLLYWOOD

The Definitive Compilation of Classics - Back by Popular Demand

Universal Records re-releases the stunning 3 CD album ‘The Music of Bollywood’. The original ‘limited edition’ released in February this year was a phenomenal success selling out in less than 3 weeks.

Bollywood’s success and popularity is greater than ever in 2003. Indian movies are receiving more and more attention from press, TV and of course the international film industry – look no further than last year’s The Guru for its Bollywood influence – and cinema-goers the world over. Bollywood’s influence has even reached London’s West End stage with Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s Bombay Dreams having successfully completed a full year to sell out audiences. .

Although there has been an Indian film industry since the late 19th Century, Bollywood was really born with the advent of sound. The first Indian “talkie”, Alam Ara, directed by Ardershir Irani, was released in March 1931 at the Majestic Cinema in Bombay. It caused a storm, as, along with the film’s popular Hindustani dialogue, it included seven songs which were a massive hit with the audience. This set an immediate trend with other filmmakers. Film songs in India became a phenomenon pushing soundtracks regularly to the top of the charts.

This trend has continued with music and song being an intrinsic part of almost all Bollywood movies, regardless of the film’s genre. Universal has been involved with Bollywood for many years and acquired its first soundtrack in 1971.

Now, we bring together some of the biggest songs from some of the hottest films – over 3½ hours of music, all digitally remastered, packaged in a beautiful full-colour digibook with a 16 page booklet containing liner notes and original album artwork – OUT NOW!
