Bollywood star 'King Khan's' global appeal
By Zubair Ahmed
BBC News, Marrakesh and Hannover

Shah Rukh Khan has a tremendous fan following around the world

Taufeeq, the owner of a DVD shop in Marrakesh's Djemaa el-Fna square, still relishes the time when he saw his idol - Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan - in the flesh. He could not shake his hand or speak to him, as there were thousands of other fans screaming and jumping to get a glimpse of the star. But, he grins broadly as he says: "I can tell others I was there too."

December 2 last year was a historic day for Moroccans, when Khan stepped out of his car and was mobbed by fans. He had come to take part in the Marrakesh Film Festival and was treated like royalty - literally. He was the guest of Morocco's King Mohammed VI, who bestowed the prestigious L'Etoile d'Or national honour on him - the first Indian to be granted the accolade. I met Taufeeq more than three months later, but he and his Bollywood-mad friends were still gushing about the star's visit.

'Biggest star'
Khan won over the Moroccans when he said his deceased father wanted him to visit Morocco because he believed it was the most beautiful country in the world.

Festival director Ilham Aborro knew Khan's arrival would be a momentous occasion. "He was the biggest star of the show. We decided we will call others, but we will invite him too," she said.

Khan, perhaps fully aware of his popularity abroad, tries to attend film festivals. He is most likely to go to Marrakesh again this year. He has been to the Berlin Film Festival three times.

Julia Wessel, editor of Ishq, a Bollywood magazine in Germany, calls him a true "global ambassador of the Indian culture. When he came to the Berlin Film Fest the media asked him a lot of questions. He came across as witty and clever and the media loved him," she said.

Khan is now the most sought after Bollywood star in Germany.

A staff member of the Cinemax multiplex in Hannover, where the actor's movie Don 2 had been playing, declared: "If you are talking about Bollywood in Germany you are talking about Shah Rukh Khan."

A young German woman named Shanti told me she was a "big fan" of Khan. "But my mum is an even bigger fan," she said. "She has a poster of him pasted on the bathroom door and she wants to move into Mannat [Khan's home in Mumbai]."

Indeed, the actor seems to rule the hearts and minds of many German women.

Shanti's love for Khan appears quite deep. She, along with two friends, spent a whole day in Hannover recording a song from Khan's movie Kal Ho Na Ho. She had skipped work to do this, just for fun.

Germany's love affair with Khan began with the screening of his blockbuster Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham on television in 2006. He achieved instant stardom in Germany, especially with female admirers of Bollywood films.

Khan seems to be equally popular in other parts of Europe too.

In 2009, when promoting his film Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, he asked fans to participate in a dance competition. Entries were to be sent on video. Some amateur dancers in Madrid - united in their love for Khan - got together and recorded a dance sequence which won the competition.

And of course, there is the star's Morocco fan base.

New Bollywood films are rarely screened there so cinemas showing Hindi films rely heavily on Khan's old hits. "Old films too do very well. We recently screened Pardes which had Khan playing the lead," said the manager of one cinema. "There was pandemonium. Too many people turned up. They all wanted to enter the movie hall. They smashed up the glass door," he said.

Khan's status as the number one star in his own country may be debatable, but outside India, he is the undisputed "King of Bollywood".

Wherever I went people asked me if I had met the star. A Moroccan man stopped me in the bazaars of Marrakesh and asked: "Do you know the king of Bollywood?" I asked: "Hrithik Roshan?" He laughed triumphantly at my feigned ignorance and declared proudly, "It's Shah Rukh Khan, man."

I once interviewed the actor in 2005. I was lucky to have had 20 minutes with him. At that time, he was busier than ever. I asked him if he was over-selling himself by endorsing just about any consumer product. He replied: "Shah Rukh sells. Period."

Indeed, Shah Rukh Khan sells, so much that this time, my request for another interview went unanswered.

Kolkata:

A visibly annoyed Shah Rukh Khan on Tuesday sought to put an end to his comparison with KKR's former captain Sourav Ganguly and asked the fans to "grow up" and stop correlating the two.

"Grow up please. This is sport. Let's play it like a sport. We keep on talking about Kings and Khans... This is crap to be honest. I say this with love and respect to all of you," SRK said on the sidelines of the Kolkata Knight Riders post-match party.

The Bollywood superstar, who raged a debate after he dumped the left-hander following a forgettable three-season stint, said it's high time people get over it and leave the former India skipper alone.

"To be honest, if we don't outgrow this, it is embarrassing not only to us, not only to me, it's embarrassing for Dada also...

"We should get over this. Every time I come to Kolkata, if you are going to bring this up for a few headlines and some spicy titbits I think it's a little unfair." he said.

"It's not only unfair to me. It is unfair to the great legend that Sourav Ganguly is... Let him play his cricket, lead his life in whichever team he plays for, whether it's an Indian team, an IPL team or a domestic team.

"We should all be cheering for the greatness that he has achieved instead of making him small with these comparisons and belittling the importance of what Sourav Ganguly has achieved in Indian sports history," the actor said.
Asked whether he might think of bringing in Ganguly as a mentor for his side, Shah Rukh, in a tongue-in-cheek manner, said, "I'm the mentor of this team. The owner of this team. The hero of this team. I'm the God of this team."

"Generally what I'm saying is we have a lot of love for all the cricketing greats. We have had some wonderful memories with him. We wish him all the best. We wish him whenever he plays. He is one of the great legends the country will ever see in any sport.

"Personally, I'm the greatest fan of Dada as far as cricket is concerned. We worked together (for a commercial) many years ago. We had a lot of great moments together with his family," he reiterated.

Ganguly, who headed Pune Warriors against KKR earlier this month at the Eden Garden, stirred Bengali's emotions to the hilt as loyalties were divided among the masses. The match was seen as a Dada versus Khan battle.

The Knight Riders play Mumbai Indians on Wednesday at the Wankhede stadium, before heading to Pune for a return leg match on May 19.

Having suffered two defeats in succession, the Knight Riders need to notch one win from their remaining two matches to advance to the next stage.

There is a lot that’s keeping actor Shah Rukh Khan occupied these days. The star is shuttling between managing his shoots and taking time out to cheer for his cricket team and watch them play.

Ask him on the apparent news of actor Abhishek Bachchan being roped in for Farah Khan’s next Happy New Year, and the actor denies it outright. “Well, that’s not correct. In fact, I happened to read it in the newspapers myself. The cast has not been decided yet, except for one, that’s me… the announcement will be made soon hopefully,” he says.

Apart from shooting for his films, King Khan is also committed to take time out for his cricket team. So does that get hectic for this charismatic star? “What hectic?I fly in my private plane. I’m a fu***n’ superstar man! I live in a presidential suite. I go cheer for my team, wish them luck, I get to chat up with people outside work and I enjoy it,” says Khan at a Tag Heuer event in the city.

Considering his nine years of endorsing a watch, you wonder if Khan has been working on getting punctual too.Laughing, he says, “I don’t think it’s got anything to do with me being punctual or prompt. In fact, had that been the criteria I don’t think I would ever qualify to endorse a watch,” he quips.
Like many other actors who have been heading out for a holiday or planning one, Khan too is looking forward to a short summer vacation with family. “I usually take time off in June because the kids have a vacation. But this time I’ll be working, shooting in Europe. So most probably they’ll join me mid-June some time,” he adds. “I usually plan my shoots in a way that I can spend ample time with my family too.”
Prod him on what’s the next thing on his mind, and he jokes, “Sandwich (smiles)…I’m starving for one.”
Though he was advised complete bed rest by his doctor, the actor knew it was an important match for his team as they were playing Saurav Ganguly and his team Pune at the Eden Gardens, and he had to go there for moral support.

The two warring Khans of Bollywood may just come face-to-face after three years. The occasion — filmmaker Karan Johar’s 40th birthday bash on May 25. The party, reportedly themed ‘Naughty@40’, will see Johar’s Bollywood friends throwing many a ‘naughty’ surprise
his way.

However, the biggest buzz around the event is that about actors Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan expecting to cross paths after three years — after having a much talked about fight in 2008 at Katrina Kaif’s birthday party, the last they came face to face was at actor Amrita Arora’s sangeet ceremony in 2009.

Since then, the two have always steered clear of each other. The party is making news for its starry guest list. Actor Twinkle Khanna, who hasn’t been spotted at public functions as she was advised rest due to pregnancy, will attend the party with star husband Akshay Kumar. All the young directors who’ve debuted with Johar’s Dharma Productions will be present.

“Yes, the party for Karan’s birthday is happening at Hotel Taj Lands End. But I can’t reveal the guest list,” Johar’s spokesperson says. Sources, however, reveal what the spokesperson doesn’t. “Almost everyone in Bollywood has been invited - right from actors Hrithik Roshan, Emraan Hashmi, Kangna Ranaut to filmmakers Ekta Kapoor, Aditya Chopra, Ayan Mukerji, Tarun Mansukhani and Shakun Batra,” says a source. Apparently, Kareena Kapoor, who is on a holiday abroad is cutting it short and coming back to Mumbai just to attend the bash.

Shah Rukh Khan hails Dada and Gambhir

KKR co-owner also cites Kolkata fans as the reason behind team’s success

It was billed as the encounter between Shah Rukh Khan, co-owner of the Kolkata Knight Riders, and Sourav Ganguly, former captain of the team. And while the match between KKR and the Pune Warriors India lived up to the hype and hoopla that preceded it, SRK and Dada shared a laugh and a chat after the match. This indicated their mutual respect and admiration despite them representing different franchises in the IPL.

Shah Rukh Khan, who spoke to IPLT20.com following the keenly-contested match that went KKR’s way, even reiterated that Ganguly is a cricketing legend and that watching him play was an absolute delight. SRK also had some high praise for current KKR captain, Gautam Gambhir, and he expressed hope that his team would go the distance in IPL 2012.

Here’s more on what Shah Rukh had to say about Dada, Gautam and the Eden Gardens on what turned out to be one of the most memorable nights in IPL history.

What a match – capacity crowd, terrific atmosphere and superb finish. Your thoughts?

It was fantastic. 67,000-odd people. As Dada was also telling me, this is the greatest cricketing ground in the world and whenever it is in its full glory, which it is most of the time, it really makes us feel very proud that we can come to this city and play like this. For a team, which hadn’t been doing well, I think most of the time we do well now is because of the encouragement that people of Kolkata and Bengal have shown us.

For someone who has known Dada fairly intimately, what do you make of his legacy as a cricketer?

He is wonderful. He is a cricketing great, a legend. We’ve grown up getting used to his fours and sixes and the way he plays on the offside. It’s wonderful to see him playing every time, and tonight was no different.

KKR made it past the league stage for the first time last year. This year, they are playing terrifically. Do you think they are primed to go the distance this time?

You can’t plan, but yes, we’d like to [laughs].

A word on Gautam Gambhir, who has been leading KKR by example.

I personally believe, and this is not to take anything away from the importance of other players and captains, but I think to come into a franchise, which is owned by a movie star, which causes people to look at it [the franchise] more astutely – for a team which has been so full of controversy for no choice of ours for the last four years – for him to come and be so full of grit and determination – to prove himself to be a Kolkata boy – in my eyes, he is genuinely the finest captain that I have seen. Yes, I have seen most of them from outside. I am a cricket follower. But leading from the front and the way he talks to the boys, I think he is the most awesome captain. Apart from that he is a gentleman; a really genuine gentleman. I very seldom get impressed by leaders, but I am very impressed by Gautam Gambhir.

We understand you are a bit under the weather today. How do you still find the energy to keep coming game after game and cheering this team on?

I’ll find out. I’ll be sick tomorrow [laughs]. I shouldn’t have been doing this. But I wanted to come because it was an important match.

Which dialogue from all your films aptly summarises this KKR side?

I don’t know dialogue, but when I think of KKR, the one thing I tell them is that we should try the best and leave the rest. That is the main thing in life. And we have been going on for four-five years now and we have been gritty about the whole thing. So hopefully, the resilience will pay off.

Shah Rukh Khan is an excited kid when it comes to watching super hero films. His friends reveal that like his son Aryan, SRK too feels happy every time the bad guy get beaten up.

The actor is supposed to be considering collaborating with a Hollywood production house to work on a huge project about super heroes. While he played one in RA.One, this time around he doesn't want to act but wants to be involved only in the creative process. He was recently heard telling friends how kids and teenagers are the real kings and decide which movies will work and which won't. He feels that he needs to cater to a much younger audience and feels that a project like this could do wonders. Khan is said to be planning a series of meetings in the coming months to take this idea ahead.
:yippie::yippie::yippie:

The latest buzz in the bollywood is that Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol are once again going to team up to show their magic on the silver screen. If the rumours are to be believed, then Karan Johar, who will be announcing his next release by the end of this year, is planning to cast them together once again for his new movie. The duo has given amazing hits together such as BAAZIGAR, KARAN ARJUN, DILWALE DULHANIYA LE JAYENGE, KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI, KABHI KHUSHI KABHI GHAM, and MY NAME IS KHAN. And another movie from them together can definitely rock the screen.
If all goes well, then most likely Karan Johar will start shooting for his film from next year.

The reason behind the same is that Shahrukh is busy with his upcoming films; two back to back movies with Yashraj Films’ and then with Farah Khan’s ‘Happy New Year’ which is going to release in August this year. As of Kajol, if she takes up this project, it will be marked as her second comeback to Bollywood; as this will be her first movie that she will be doing after the birth of his son, Yug.

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan and his better half, Gauri, seem to have taken a liking to 'designing'; while Gauri has seriously taken up interior designing, King Khan, it seems, is taking a keen interest in fashion designs these days.

The actor, known for his casual-chic style, is more often than not seen in a pair of ripped jeans teamed with plunging V-neck tees for a casual outing or an elegant black suit for a formal do.

But the superstar seems to have got tired of his signature look and so, is trying his hand at not only personalised designs, but also at customising his clothes!

In the recent past, each time he was spotted at an IPL match, the star showed up in a madeto- measure item - whether it is his active purple and gold quilted sleeveless jacket with the KKR logo or the customised white shirt with a graphic of a purple waistcoat stitched on it.

King Khan also wore a white sweatshirt with a green waistcoat that had the emblem of the team on it and at other times, he has ditched the jersey for the more-official purple blazer.

During one of the matches, SRK also sported a purple scarf that he draped on his head - like a hoodie - from within his tee.

But the experimentation doesn't stop here. While his love for scarves is common knowledge, he was recently spotted wearing a keffiyeh in traditional style - as a turban wrapped around his head - as he attended industry insider friend Mushtaq Sheikh's birthday bash.

SRK had always worn the accessory as a scarf around his neck, but never draped it as a turban.

The actor, however, confidently showed off his new look which was complemented by his salt and pepper French beard.
