I have made wrong choices, says Shahid Kapur
Shubha Shetty-Saha
Friday, October 13, 2006 23:30 IST

Actor Shahid Kapur, who has no films apart from the upcoming 'Vivaah', insists on being selective.

Salman Khan is the iconic Prem, a character you are now playing in 'Vivaah'. Do you fear being compared?
I wouldn't even dare to compare myself with Salman. I am his huge fan. There was no pressure of comparison as such. The character here is pretty different .

Is it true that Salman walked out of 'Milenge Milenge' because of the differences between you two?
That's not true. I don't even know that he is not a part of 'Milenge Milenge' anymore. In fact, the producers of the film have not got in touch with me since the past two years. I don't know what's happening to that film.

Some of your films have not done well. Have you now become selective?
I would be lying if I say I haven't made wrong choices. But I have learnt from them. Yes, I have become very choosy. I haven't signed anything for a while. I need to sit back and review what I really want to do. I am young. So there is no hurry really. I am glad to be in times where different kinds of films are being made.

Will a traditional love story like 'Vivaah' find its place in this age of multiplex movies?
Why not? First, 'Vivaah' has a unique concept. It trails the journey of a couple from their engagement to their marraige. The couple is getting into an arranged marriage. Very few films have dealt with the theme of arranged marriages. The youth will identify with this, as they could encounter a similar situation in their lives. Sooraji (Bharjatya) has treated it interestingly. It will make you think even after you have left the theatre. You will take a part of the film with you.

Despite coming from a broken family, Shahid Kapur is optimistic about the institution of marriage. (PTI Photo)

Shahid Kapur might be uncomfortable talking about pre-marital sex and his relationship with Kareena. But he is more than happy discussing his view on marriage. Here is Shahid Kapur for you.

Being in love with Kareena, how does it feel to do a film on arranged marriage?

Personally speaking, I might not be able to connect with the concept of arranged marriage. But I know many people around me who have gone in for such an alliance. Many youngsters in contemporary India still follow this tradition. It’s a subject that touches the lives of many youngsters today.

A distinction is often made between love marriage and arranged marriage. Does it imply love is arranged?

I feel that it takes time to fall in love after marriage and understand what the institution stands for. When two unknown people are told about a marital alliance, it is difficult to find out when and whether they will fall in love and get to understand each other.

Coming from a broken family, do you still have faith in the institution of marriage?

Yes, I believe in this institution.

What is your take on pre-marital sex?

Before Kareena entered your life, did you ever see yourself going in for an arranged marriage?

I don’t think I’m in a position to answer this. I think a marital decision is a matter of conditioning and the values one grows up with. If I was born into a traditional family, I might have thought differently.

'One should never lose aim in life'

Tuesday, October 31, 2006 20:35 IST

18 till i die...
Shahid Kapur, Actor

My college…
I went to Mithibai College.

Favourite hangout…
I used to hang out a lot in the canteen and eat samosas.

Pocket money…
I started working when I was 16 with Shiamak Davar and was also working as an assistant director. So I took care of my own expenses.

If I were 18 again…
I would be carefree, because I think I haven’t really enjoyed my youth too much since I started working very early on. By the time I was 21, I got into films full-fledged and my youth was centred on work. I would love it if I had a full day to myself with absolutely no responsibilities and no pressure.

Most memorable moment…
I had a great time in college. We drove down to Goa once – a bunch of us, in two cars. I had just bought myself a Fiat Palio and I thought it was the best car in the world. I must have been 17 or 18. A bunch of the guys got drunk, lost their way and reached six hours late. But we had a blast!

Lesson learnt…
I think it is very good to enjoy yourself because that’s the age when you are growing as a person and discovering new things about yourself. But one should never lose aim in life.

I was very lucky because while in college I had a very clear aim about my career though I couldn’t finish my graduation due to work.

Shahid gets himself a bachelor pad
By: Upala KBR
November 1, 2006

He’s barely 25, but Shahid Kapoor thinks it’s the right time for him to move out from the safety net of his parents’ home. And so he bought himself a three-bedroom apartment on the 14th floor of Raj Classic (Versova) that he moved into a few months ago.

Elaborating on his reasons for moving out, Shahid says, “I reached a point when I wanted to live on my own and experience life as an individual. I felt that this is the right time for me to do this, so I did.”

Inner space

A source close to Shahid says, “The interior design of his bachelor pad has been done up by both Twinkle Khanna and Kareena. Shahid was very sure of what he wanted, so the apartment has a warm, woody feel to it with earthy tones, lots of whites and candles, stonework and slats instead of curtains.

One unusual aspect is this particular wall in his drawing room. Instead of putting up a painting or a wall hanging, Shahid’s got a French scroll painted on the entire wall in a parchment effect. It’s visually very interesting and is the first thing you notice on entering his home. Apparently, it was Twinkle’s idea.”

The flat was originally a three-bedroom apartment, but Shahid had it converted into one large bedroom area and a den. The source adds, “Shahid wanted a home to come back to, and not a grand, opulent hotel. He wanted a homely atmosphere and that’s what he’s got.”

Even though he’s young, Shahid is far from lonely in his new apartment. “I love my space and I’ve gotten really used to it: just me, my dog Kaizer and my domestic help. I made the decision to move out over a year ago. But I honestly don’t feel alone because dad stays on the floor below, so I’m there for lunch and dinner almost every day,” he says.

But living alone means taking decisions and even doing mundane things like paying the electricity, gas and phone bills. Says Shahid, “That’s something I’ve always wanted to do. I have been earning for myself since I was 16, so I’ve been independent from a very young age. It’s been part of my nature and I like it that way.”

Wedding plans

Shahid’s next release, Sooraj Barjatya’s Vivah, based on arranged marriages, opens next week. As for his own vivah with Kareena, Shahid says, “There is still a lot of time for that. Both Kareena and I are at a very important stage in our careers.

There is a lot of work that Kareena would like to do and I think she’s at the best stage of her career right now. For me, my journey has only just begun. There is a lot that I need to prove to myself and to the industry before I can take on the responsibility of marriage.”

Vivaahcious Shahid
[31 Oct 2006]

“I Personally Feel Nobody’s Really Used Kareena And Me Well In A Film”

SD: When you started out, everyone was touting you to be a Shah Rukh Khan in the making, which is not some easy shoes to fit. And despite ‘Fida’ being a damp squib at the box-office, your talent was never questioned. But what followed was an array of simmering to huge flops, whatever happened to the promise you showed?

SK: See what happened is everybody takes a large number of films to establish themselves. I was very luck that my debut film, ‘Ishq Vishk’ did well. Any star has taken up at least ten to fifteen films to establish themselves. I have done about seven films by now. What tends to happen so that because you’re a newcomer, you tend to take on work very instinctively. As time goes by you realize that a lot more needs to be considered before getting into a project. That’s what had happened with me. Honestly I’ve been working round the clock for the past three years and I’ve had no time to sit back and think. And amongst the films that I have done, I think the last two have done reasonably well. I’m well aware that despite my performance being appreciated in ‘Fida’, it didn’t do well at all. And nothing works like success in this industry. I have nevertheless understood my mistakes; I’m analyzing what I did wrong, where I went wrong. And the largest factor is the script; I think if you have a good script in hand, fifty percent of your battle is already won. And if you look at all the recent films that have done well, it’s been governed by a good script. They are looking at newer subjects, constantly trying to push the envelope. I’m not regretful about the work I’ve done. I’m not going to blame anyone ’coz honestly as an actor, I wanted to work with some people, which I did. But I think where I went wrong was my choice of scripts. I didn’t give enough importance to it. I’m glad that ‘36 Chinatown’ did well; all credit goes to Abbas Mastaan. I’ve however decided that I’m going to give more time and importance to a script.

SD: Was it a reassurance of sorts to have critics finall ackonwledge your chemistry with Kareena on screen in ’36 Chinatown’? Audiences were disappointed to not find any sparks on screen between the two of you in ‘Fida’ and also recently, ‘Chup Chup Ke’.

SK: You know in ‘Chup Chup Ke’ there was no romance between Bebo and me. You can’t blame two actors if they are not provided with the scenes to prove on-screen chemistry. As a matter of fact in ‘Chup Chup Ke’ I had more scenes with Neha Dhupia than with Bebo. ‘Chinatown..’ also had a gamut of actors but there were a lot of interesting interactive scenes between me and Bebo on a romantic level, so there was scope for us to perform and vibe. But by and large I think it’s the script and the characterisation. You might see the same two actors perform in one film and they look great together and then you see them in another film and it just doesn’t work.

SD: Is it true that you feel like Kareena and you have done too many films together and now you’re cutting down on working together?

SK: That’s not true. We’ve done only three films together. And in any case, I don’t think like, ‘Oh I’ve done three films with Bebo so I shouldn’t do anymore’. It was never intended, to do so many films with her in the first place. We were just approached by directors individually. It was never even like a package deal. Even with Abbas Mastan we were approached separately and offered the roles. Its just co-incidental that we happened to do them together. I’m sure that many people will find it hard to believe but it was genuinely like that. Both Bebo and I are of the opinion that one shouldn’t mix one’s personal life with professional. And ‘Fida’ hadn’t done well, so it’s not like it would be greatly beneficial for us to do a film together anyways. So my stand more or less remains the same. I personally feel that nobody’s really used us well in a film. ’36 Chinatown’ being an exception. So in the future what we will look at now is a film which manages to utilize us well as a pair on a romantic and emotional level.

SD: You do have Boney Kapoor’s ‘Milenge Milenge’ with Kareena on the cards…

SK: ‘Milenge Milenge’ I haven’t shot for over two years now. I honestly don’t know what the status of the film is. I haven’t been contacted by anyone for the shoot, so I’m pretty much clueless about the project.

SD: Now since you’re hibernating, easing off on work. You must’ve had time to asses where you went wrong and what changes you need to make. Is there a strategy, a game plan to brew in some success?

SK: Gosh, no I think it’s pretty basic. I don’t believe in strategizing. First thing one needs to accept; or rather the most difficult thing is to say no. I’m really taking a chance here, knowing that I’m not working, not going on my sets, and knowing, most of all, that I’m taking a break without having delivered a blockbuster hit. Usually what people do is after they’ve given a big hit, they sit back and take a break, because it’s convenient, since you’ve given a hit, you can afford to take a break. I’ve done it simply because I thought it was required. I feel there are two ways that you can make it in the industry. One is, you play the number game, and go by the law of averages, saying ‘ok I’m gonna do four films in a year and hope for at least one to work’. The other way is much more difficult, being choosy. But I think this way at least you’re seriously applying yourself to your work, instead of just going with the flow. Whether it’s right or wrong is only for time to tell. I realized I was excited; I was all of 23 when I entered the industry, when ‘Ishq Vishk’ released. I wanted to do everything that came my way. But now I have to wisen up. And trust me its not easy. I go through shitty days wondering what I’m doing just sitting at home. Why am I not on the sets? But then, I have to look at what it offers me in the long run.

SD: You think you need to work your mojo as far as your image is concerned? Haven’t you played the good boy card for too long? It’s just reached a stage where everyone knows exactly what to expect from you.

SK: I don’t think so. This is what the people decide. I have never decided for myself or I don’t think anybody does. I don’t think in today’s time there is anything known as an image. Anybody can do any role as long as they are able to pull it off. I really think so.

SD: Is it that you have preferred to play it safe? When I say negative I don’t mean literally so. Your character in ‘Fida’ for instance wasn’t obviously sold with a stubble or kohl in his eyes, but it was someone with a mean potential. Don’t you think that in today’s time when makers are constantly pushing the envelope as far as the content is concerned, you have been lagging behind? I mean, even Amitabh at the age of sixty played sexy Sam…

SK: For me it’s very simple. A good script is a good script. It can be a comedy, it could be a love story, it could be a thriller, a time period film or a futuristic film. It could be anything. All genres of the films work. Right? But within that category, it has to be a good script, that’s my criteria for choosing the film. The genre doesn’t matter to me. So I don’t think I need to jump out and say that I need to do a different film. For me the script is the only thing that’s required. How wrong can one go with a good script? Even if someone is an amateur or doesn’t have enough experience but even if he does it simply, I think people will like it. ’Coz at the end of the day film making is story telling. Some of the films that I did and didn’t work, their scripts didn’t work, very honestly speaking. And somewhere I had to pay a little more attention. That was my basic mistake, in fact, that was my only mistake. As far as my work is concerned I always give it my best shot. I work hard as I can and I try and do the best. I was a bit over worked and may be I didn’t get time, to prepare for that part and since I was shooting back to back so people thought that it looked similar. And when you do films back to back, you really don’t get time to sit back and really chiselle a character out. Look back and tell me how different are any of the roles other people do? So when the film works everything about it works.

SD: But to play a hero as such not an ideal hero, like an Abhishek Bachchan can play a positive character and a negative. And people are only too thrilled to find surprises.

SK: That has been there always. I don’t think any of the heroes who are doing a negative role are doing something largely different. Amitji did it in his earlier days; Shah Rukh did it in ‘Darr’, so I don’t think it’s anything new. I would like repeat myself here. It’s all about a good script. If the script doesn’t work nothing works.

PART 2

SD: Talking about ‘Vivaah’, do you think that a candyfloss will work in today’s day and age when bold subjects like extra marital affair are being explored?

SK: I am no body to judge this film. I am in awe of Sooraj Bharjatiya to be every honest. So I think I will be a bit biased towards him as I am a big fan of his.

SD: But what does your gut instinct say about it?
SK: I don’t know. It’s my first film with Sooraj, don’t ask me about it, as I don’t think I will be a practical judge of it. I think when people will see it they can judge it.

SD: The character Prem is so etched in people’s mind.

SK: I think every film of Soorajji’s male protagonists’ always signifies what is made up as a quality according to him a woman wants in a man. I think that’s what it is. Prem stands for love. And I think for him his hero always has to project, what a woman would want to see in a man or her man to be like. And for the rest of it I think he will be the better person to answer about why it’s Prem. But I think with every film his Prem changes a little. It’s not always the same. No two people are the same and no two scripts are the same. Obviously with different situations and different backdrops, but what the character stands for always remain the same. That’s what I have understood of his character.

SD: Personally do you think an idealistic character like this exists in real life? I mean, Ram was restricted to mythology...

SK: I am sure he does. I think it would be very pessimistic if I say he doesn’t.

SD: How similar are you to the character?

SK: Well I tried to understand it as much as I could and how Soorajji wanted it to be done. So if you ask if I am like Prem then I don’t think so. There are certain qualities which will be similar. Prem is a bit of a dreamer, a bit shy; some of the qualities that I have in common with him. But at the end of the day I am an actor and I have to play the part and I have to mould myself into it. It’s probably the most subdued part that I played. In most of my films I am very exuberant, moving from here to there all the time and talking out a lot. This character is little on the quieter side, little shy. Here the whole role is a bit toned down a bit, a little understated.

SD: Sooraj Barjatya’s last film didn’t do well and it had a similar content. Is ‘Vivaah’ a death wish?

SK: No I don’t think it had similar content. This character is quite different than all his films. This is quite an original story with original characters. If anything is similar to his earlier films, it’s the youth that ‘Maine Pyaar Kiya’ has. Where it had a love story of two very young, innocent characters and that’s probably the only similarity. And it is diametrically opposite to ‘Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon’. Also ‘Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon’ was more today’s character and a more exuberant film. There he tried to make a film which he thought would connect with today’s youth and was very contemporary. But this film is very much what you have seen of him till in ‘Hum Saath Saath Hai’. It is towards those sensibilities. But ‘Vivaah’ is the one of the most sensitive films he had ever made. Probably the simplest story he has ever told. There is no exaggeration in terms of sets or costumes. Everything is treated on a very real level. Because as the tag line says that it’s a story from engagement to marriage. He has tried to capture true moments people who are getting into an arranged marriage, would go through. And if people who have gone to meet a ladki, or rishtey ki baat karne jaise log milte hain which ninety percent of our country still does, if those people can connect with these moments, I feel the film will work.

SD: You being a new age guy, how did you relate to the subject, didn’t you find the whole process of finding love going backwards?

SK: See we are a part of about two or three percent of the country’s sensibilities. 85 to 90 percent of this country believes in arranged marriages, which goes to see a ladki for a rishta, which I won’t. I probably wouldn’t do that…

SD: It’s too late for that anyways…

SK: Haha, yeah that’s true. But I come from a very different sensibility. But as an actor there are so many parts which I play that may not be close to the real me at all. If you’re talking about parts, like in ‘Fida’ I’ve never held a gun like I did in the film and shot somebody in real life.

SD: I hope so...

SK: (Laughs) Well jokes apart. I think the film is largely based on the subject of honouring a commitment, which everyone can relate to. I mean marriages these days are being treated as a touch and go thing. Tolerance levels of people are decreasing by the hour. And the film actually stresses on keeping up the commitment despite the odds.

SD: You’ve actually put light on something nice here, which leads me to my next question. In times where love ends before it’s begun. More so in the world of glamour, where romantic relationships are so short lived. You and Kareena remain thick as ever. You’ll are the one couple that seems to be breaking the Bollywood record of relationship spans, which makes me wonder if you’ll ever have bad days.

SK: Of course every relationship has bad days, and Kareena and I are no different. It’ll be very difficult to put it in words how we have actually stayed together. I know that it does take a lot of hard work. Relationships are not a cakewalk. You’d like to believe that love just makes everything work itself, but the individuals involved need to put in that extra effort. There are a lot of adjustments. Sometimes you have to prioritise and sometimes step down. But then it becomes a little less stressful when you really love the person. If you keep your eye on the prize, it won’t inhibit you from taking the effort.

I've never met a girl for a 'rishta'- Shahid Kapur

By Swati Chaudhary, Bollywood Trade News Network
source: glamsham

(http://www.glamsham.com/sendlink.asp?page=http://www.glamsham.com/movies/scoops/06/nov/08_vivah_shahid_kapur_amrita_rao.asp&title=I%27ve%20never%20met%20a%20girl%20for%20a%20 %27rishta%27-%20Shahid%20Kapur) http://media.glamsham.com/download/wallpaper/movies/images/v/vivah4_s.jpg (http://www.glamsham.com/download/wallpaper/wallpaperdetails.asp?cat=12&wall=552)

Sooraj Barjatya's VIVAH starring Shahid Kapur and Amrita Rao deals with the concept of arranged marriage. It beautifully captures myriad moments cherished by a couple from engagement to marriage.

"VIVAH is a simple film about 2 sensibilities coming together and discovering each other to an extent that they know more about each other than themselves. It's going back to innocence for me. This film is based on a real life story and like all my films; VIVAH also has an emotional climax. It is my toughest film so far," enthuses Barjatya.

The role of Poonam seems tailor made for the beautiful Amrita Rao who plays a coy, demure bride in VIVAH. She is overwhelmed at the opportunity of working with Rajshri Productions. "VIVAH is God's gift to me. My long cherished childhood dream of working with Sooraj ji has been fulfilled," says Amrita.

And what is her take on love marriage v/s arranged marriage? "I think marriage is the most important decision of life. It's really not about love or arranged marriage. One needs to spend adequate time with the person, know him/her completely and faith in your partner is ofcourse very important," opines Amrita.

Barjatya's quintessential Prem is back but this time around it's Shahid Kapur. Playing Prem was an honour and a responsibility he says. "I had many questions in my mind when Sooraj ji narrated the script to me. The film is about arranged marriage, a concept very alien to a 25-year-old guy like me. I mean I've never formally met a girl for a 'rishta' or ever had that kind of a meeting in my life, though I've seen it around me in my family and friend circle. But that's about it."

http://media.glamsham.com/download/wallpaper/movies/images/v/vivah3_s.jpg (http://www.glamsham.com/download/wallpaper/wallpaperdetails.asp?cat=12&wall=552)

"VIVAH traces the journey from engagement to marriage, an area completely untouched today. I'm sure after seeing the film people would identify with it. They'll be like 'Oh! This has happened to me or this is what I told you the first time we met," adds an elated Shahid.

Well we believe you Shahid...

The film is a heart-warming story of commitment and unconditional love and will take you through many magical moments.

VIVAH releases on 10th November.

Amrita, Shahid ready for Vivah

Hiren Kotwani/ HT Style

Mumbai, November 9, 2006

The chemistry Shahid Kapur and Amrita Rao share onscreen seems to match the camaraderie they share off it, as one discovered at the Rajshri Productions office where the duo was promoting their forthcoming film Vivah.

Kapur, clad in a tee and jeans, and Rao in a yellow salwaar-kurta, looked like they had stepped right out of the film’s poster. The pair talk to HT Style on marriage and movies.

In this day how do you relate , to your characters in Vivah?

Shahid: You don’t necessarily have to always relate, but must learn to adapt to the situation the character faces. As an actor it would be very boring to play myself. There were certain areas I could relate to. I’ve never gone to see a girl for an arranged meeting, so that part was interesting — to do something that I’ve never done off screen.

Amrita: When Soorajji and his dad narrated the script, they asserted ‘don’t see the film as a banner and that you must do it, because it’s important to relate to Poonam’. Coming from a contrasting background, at no point did I feel why did she do such things or she should have done that instead. That’s how I committed myself to the part.

Shahid Kapur and Amrita Rao's Vivah releases on November 10.
How much have your views on marriage changed over the years with college romances, serious relationships and so on?

Shahid: It’s individual as one person can’t decide for anyone else and I don’t want to be judgmental. The understanding between two people forms a relationship and it’s important that they should be happy in it.

I’m strongly in favour of marriage. It’s a fundamental aspect of our lives. This is one relationship we’re allowed to choose, and with this we form our family with which we , spend the rest of our lives.

Amrita: I agree with Shahid, although a sizeable number of people think of the concept as frivolous. Divorce is no longer taboo. You casually say “We , didn’t get along” and easily snap out of it. But then what’s the difference between humans and animals who don’t have responsibility commitment.

Do you believe in arranged marriages?

Amrita: My parents had one too. While our generation is still familiar with the concept of arranged marriage, the next one doesn’t really know about it. There’s nothing wrong with the concept or with the fact that most of the new generation is unaware of it. As long as you know the person well enough and are ready for marriage, then you can go ahead with it.

Shahid: I disagree with Amrita that people are not familiar with arranged marriage. That’s a misconception with people from different strata and cities. A large number of people in small towns and cities get into arranged marriages. Depending on their background and upbringing, people take different paths. Some meet people and fall in love, while some meet their partners through arranged meetings.

Despite having done three films together, how have you managed to retain a freshness and innocence?
Shahid: Being a certain kind of person with certain sensibilities, Soorajji sees romance in a certain way, which he portrays on screen. What you’re seeing is the way Soorajji looks at love and romance.

Amrita: It’s about the way Soorajji looks at the purity of love that exists between a man and a woman, the subtle nuances of which very few directors have captured convincingly on screen. Rajshri Films promote certain values that our generation grew up watching. I don’t know what today’s kids learn, considering the films they watch these days. Maybe he’s trying to remind people of Maine Pyar Kiya.

How real are romances set in traditional families in a time of dating, marriage portals and pre-marital sex?

Shahid: Are we saying arranged marriages don’t exist? Don’t people meet for rishtas? Has the courtship period between engagement and marriage ceased to exist? Don’t people promise to spend their lives together anymore? If not, then I don’t want to live in that kind of society People say this be . cause they feel its cool to say this. We might wear new clothes but we touch our father’s feet when we meet him. We shop in malls, but still celebrate Diwali at home. We haven’t forgotten our culture and traditions. If the west is coming to India, we won’t forget our tradition. I can’t say whether the film will connect or not, but the subject is totally relevant.

Amrita: (Laughing) Shahid has covered it all and spoken for me too.

Shahid: Ask her something else or she will get upset.

Shahid's wait is over
The actor signs a film after two years, will be seen in director Rohit Shetty's next

After waiting for two years for the right project to come his way, actor Shahid Kapoor has finally signed on the dotted line. Director Rohit Shetty of Golmaal fame has managed to convince Shahid Kapoor to act in his yet untitled film. The film will be produced by Ramesh Sippy.

Shahid says, "I was looking for a great subject. I have been listening to scripts for a while now. But when I met Rohit, something just felt right. I think Rohit is a talented director and I loved his script. Why not sign something good when it comes to you? I am happy and really looking forward to doing the film."

Director Rohit Shetty says, "I have an odd combination in the film, withNana http://cms.mumbaimirror.com/portalfiles/1/30/200611/Image/131106/e5.jpg Rohit Shetty Patekar and Shahid in the lead roles. But at the end of the day, it is a light-hearted, comedy film for family audiences. It is a very unusual role for Nana which the audiences have never seen before."

Speaking about Shahid doing the film, Rohit says, "Shahid told me that he has not signed any film in a long time but he loved my script from the time it was narrated to him. I am glad that I have him in the film."

The film will go on floors sometime in mid- 2007.

Kareena and I prefer to stay at home: Shahid Kapoor

Shahid Kapoor on how he unwinds whenever he gets a free weekend:

My kind of weekend:
Whenever I get a free weekend, I let the actor within me take a backseat and make way for the photographer that I so love to be.

I click a lot of pictures randomly and on the weekend, I sit with my laptop and a photo software opened on it.

A techie in disguise:
These days, I’m fiddling with tones — varying from sepia to normal. It is amazing how different tones lend a picture an altogether new look. I’m so addicted to working on the photos on the computer that I lose track of time. And then my family and Kareena come into action.

On my free weekends, I have to take time out for them or else my laptop will be smashed on my head. Another reason why I stay glued to technology is because I am not at all a party person.

Favourite food:
Neither am I fond of eating out — I love home-cooked food. Indeed, both Kareena and I prefer our private space at home to going out. I think we love being that way because at other times, shooting keeps us away from the house. My friends know this and they too flock to my house when I’m free.

Shahid's perfect holiday:
For me, a perfect holiday is when I have my loved ones and friends around. Once again my laptop comes into action, as I have my DVD player and all my favourite music in it.

Basically, I go with the flow of things around me. And to be able to enjoy it fully, I take the concept of timetable out of my schedule completely.

I think I have my own identity as an actor: Shahid
Nilufer Qureshi
Saturday, November 18, 2006 18:24 IST

Shahid Kapur discusses the sweet smell of success with Nilufer Qureshi
Courtesy personified, he addresses journos as “sir” and “ma’am.” He was considered the Next Best Thing and… still is. There have been the hits and the flops, the personal agonies and ecstasies.
Right now, he’s in the joyful mode... after all Vivah had been written off before its release. Bully for him, it has found patronage among a swelling section of lovers of good, old-fashioned kind of cinema - no jhatkas, matkas, just simplicity in the classic Barjatya style.
Over, then to the in-the-news-again Shahid Kapur:

Did you expect a positive reaction to Vivah?
I try not to expect anything from a film. But yes it was a different role for me. Very few actors get the opportunity to play the part of Prem in a Rajshri film, so I was very excited when I got the role. I’m overwhelmed with the appreciation of the film and my performance..it was far more than what I’d expected. I’ve been to theatres across the country for the promotion… the reaction has been fabulous.

Were you worried about its fate at the box office?
(Smiles) There were no daring action stunts in Vivah, neither was it touted as the blockbuster of the year. In fact, the publicity was very low key. I wanted the film to do well. It’s been wonderful so far. Right now, it’s too early to say how big a hit the film is. What has worked, is the sincerity and honesty of Soorajji (Barjatya). It’s a very traditional Indian film which the audiences have related to.

The reviews were not complimentary.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion. It’s important that the audiences for whom the film is made loves it.

Were you disappointed with the fate of your earlier films?
I was lucky to have a hit in my first film (Ishq Vishq). Subsequently, my films may have not lived upto public expectations but they were a learning experience for me. Everyone goes through a career curve. If you don’t taste failure how will you relish success? Today, I think I have my own identity as an actor. I’ve made a beginning.

Apparently you’re not signing new films.
Correct. I’ve been busy listening to scripts. I wanted to take a little time off and analyse things for myself. My toughest phase starts now. The other day I was sitting alone and thinking, “Okay, Vivah has done well, now what?” I have to make the right choices. I want to do the films I believe in.

Do you think because of your cute-boy image, the roles offered to you are limited?
Not at all. Even after Ishq Vishq I did do different roles ,whether in Fida or Vivah. I’m only 25 years old. I cannot do mature roles now.

Have you ever approached any filmmaker for work?
No. Everyone has seen my work, they know what I can do. Also I don’t think any film maker will cast me just because I’ve asked him to. If there is a suitable role, they’ll approach me. Period.

Any film you regret losing out on?

None.

Any marriage plans?
(Laughs) I’m too busy with Vivah on screen only. Off screen, my Vivah will take time…it is far away.

According to you, what makes a relationship?
Mutual trust. According to me acceptance is more important than expectation. You’ve to accept the person for what she is rather than expect her to change to fit into your scheme of things.

What was Kareena Kapoor’s reaction to Vivah?
She loved it. Kareena’s a huge fan of Soorajji. She was crying at the end of the film. She liked my performance too.

Does she like all your films?
No. You’ll be surprised, she’s my harshest critic.

What misconception do people have about you?
Initially, some people thought I had an attitude problem. I was snooty and arrogant. Not true!

How would you react if an actor refused to work with you?
Everyone has a choice to say no. I wouldn’t be disturbed by that though.

What would you say to Salman Khan if you were caught in an elevator with him?
(Laughs) That’s a difficult question. I wouldn’t know what to say to him. Believe me, I’ve no problems with him. I’m an easy sort of guy, live and let live.

Kareena says I oversleep: Shahid

Rajeev Masand

Say hello to Shahid Kapur, an actor who is latest heartthrob of young girls across the country. He has been in the movies for only a few years but has already gathered a sizeable fan following.

CNN-IBN Entertainment Editor Rajeev Masand reveals the true Shahid, a simple 25 years old guy, who borrows money from his driver when forgets wallet at home, hates to catch up with the fitness routine of his girlfriend and shudders to see a huge mobile phone bill.

Rajeev Masand: You are just 25 years of age. Tell me how difficult is it for a young star like you to not get carried away by the fame, power and money offered by your profession? Is it difficult to keep your head on your shoulders?

Shahid Kapur: I don’t think its that hard. I have my father at home who is an extremely established and a very good actor. Everyday when I come back home, he reminds me of the fact that I have just begun and that I still have a long way to go. My father is somebody who has followed his own conviction. He always followed what he believed. He tells me that fame and wealth are the kind of things that will come and go. What you truly are, is what will eventually remain.

Rajeev Masand: But isn’t it easy to get carried away? At 25, earning the kind of money and fame that you enjoy is something that you perhaps would not have got in any other profession. Isn’t it difficult to stay firmly on the ground?

Shahid Kapur: I was only 23 when Ishq Vishq released. Initially adjusting to a whole new environment did take time. I came from an extremely middle class background and I’ve seen times when I did not have enough money to fill petrol in my car. I gave a lot of auditions and I struggled a lot. So, I have seen that side of life as well.

Initially one does gets excited with the fame and the success and the luxuries. But then these are all distractions that move away your attention from the true purpose why you are here. You are here to do good work and if you want to focus on that, you actually have to give up all those luxuries. This industry is the biggest teacher of them all. It whips you well if you don’t have your head on your shoulders.

Rajeev Masand: Have you always wanted to be an actor? Both your parents are actors, so was it inevitable really?

Shahid Kapur: Honestly telling you, it wasn’t so really. I was born and brought up in Delhi where there was little or no influence of films on me. I shifted to Mumbai when I was ten. I saw lot of international films that my father showed me. This was my first exposure to acting. I must be 17-18 when I became this complete movie buff, going to theatres every Friday to catch a film. But I was still skeptical of whether I will be able to do it or not.

If you enter this industry, you need to arm yourself with necessary skills first. I did not have somebody giving me a mega launch of some kind. All that I could fall back on were my own abilities. I was very insecure about it in fact. My parents are no superstars. They are actors. And an actors’ life has got a lot of ups and downs.

I knew that this is the nature of this profession. One day you can be zooming ahead and if you are not careful the very next day you could be nowhere. So, it’s a difficult profession to be a part of. And I am quite aware of that.

Rajeev Masand: You said that you used to watch a lot of films when you were a kid. Tell me what all films inspired you as a kid?

Shahid Kapur: There were a lot of films that influenced me. I watched a lot of English films as well. Like other kids of my age I too went mad about DDLJ when I saw it. Then of course I remember watching Rangeela and Maine Pyaar Kiya. But the ones that really moved were films by serious directors like Kurosawa or Satyajit Ray. I watched a nice mix of commercial as well as art cinema. That’s how I came to know it all.

Rajeev Masand: Who were the actors that you grew up admiring? Who really did you want to be like?

Shahid Kapur: I have never wanted to be anybody really. I am extremely happy being what I am. But there were a lot of people that I looked up to like they were God like Al Pacino and Tom Cruise in Top Gun.

Rajeev Masand: Of all the characters that you have played in the films, which of them is the one that is closest to your real self?

Shahid Kapur: None of them actually. I don’t think any of the characters have been close to what I actually am.

Rajeev Masand: So you don’t necessarily need to identify with a character to be able to play it well?

Shahid Kapur: Not really. I don’t think that’s necessary at all. As an actor, you are supposed to adapt yourself to what is in the script rather than adapt the script to yourself. I think that is more important. The first and the foremost thing while approaching a role is to realise how the director is seeing it.

A lot of times when you read the script to yourself, you see the role in a certain way. But after you reach on to the sets, you realise that the director, who is like the captain of a ship has been seeing it totally differently. If you make your own version of the role, you might not fit into the larger picture of which you are supposed to be a part of, something that has been envisioned by the director.

So, you need to see the role as the director is seeing it and be sure that you can connect with it in some way. If I see that happening, then I start adding my own inputs to it. Anything in filmmaking cannot be individualistic, it has to be a collaboration otherwise it wont work.

Rajeev Masand: So have there been times when you have clashed with directors?

Shahid Kapur: Yes there have been. But eventually an actor has to listen to the director because he has the larger perspective.

Rajeev Masand: Are movie stars normal people? Do they have the same concerns, worries, issues like most people?

Shahid Kapur: Most definitely. Stars too come back to their home to their family. You are a star only till the time you are standing in front of the camera. Once the director says ‘cut’ you are again on backslapping terms with everybody. You stay with the crew of the film for many months at times. And you become so familiar with everyone that you are not treated like a star. They treat you like just another guy, and a part of the team.

Rajeev Masand:So tell me when was the last time you traveled by public transport?

Shahid Kapur: Its been a while. I remember about a year back my car broke down and I had to take a rickshaw from film city to my house.

Rajeev Masand: When was the last time you went to a cinema hall, bought a ticket and watched the film in a packed theatre?

Shahid Kapur: I do that every week. I ideally don’t like going to trials unless of course it’s a friend’s film and you cant say ‘no’. Apart from that, my tickets are booked every week to watch a film.

Rajeev Masand: Tell me how much does a packet of popcorn costs?

Shahid Kapur: I depends on where you are going. In most of the multiplexes it comes for Rs 40 or 45, which is very expensive.

Rajeev Masand: When was the last time you borrowed money from a friend or a parent?

Shahid Kapur: Lots of times. I almost always forget to carry cash. And the best thing is that Kareena never has cash on her. She always says ‘Oh I forgot’. Most often I think it’s my driver who lends me the cash. Sometimes when I have to buy a magazine or a newspaper I borrow change from my driver.

Rajeev Masand: You live alone. Can you cook?

Shahid Kapur: I can make tea. I can heat all cooked food for myself in a microwave. Actually I’m lucky because my father stays right below my house and they have some awesome meals ready all the time. So most often I have the food coming up to me from his house. Then of course I am lucky to have a servant who cooks very well for me.

Rajeev Masand: Do you know what your mobile bill is?

Shahid Kapur: Yes I know and I go red in the face every time I see it. I promise myself every month that I wont let it hike that much next time. But it just keeps getting higher and higher. I can’t even help it because I’m out of the country so much.
Rajeev Masand: So who is on your speed dial list?

Shahid Kapur: A lot of people actually. My parents, Kareena, my younger brother Ishan, my driver, makeup boy are on speed dial.

Rajeev Masand: What is that one habit of yours that Kareena cant put up with?

Shahid Kapur: Sleeping. She says that I over sleep all the time.

Rajeev Masand: And what is that one habit of hers that you cant put up with?

Shahid Kapur: She has this habit of working out twice a day. She does yoga in the morning and then goes to the gym in the evening. This messes up the whole day’s plan. And then we end up meeting only at night even when it’s been a free day all along. I really find this irritating.

Rajeev Masand: What are your biggest indulgences? Where do you like to spend?

Shahid Kapur: I don’t have any indulgences as such. I do like to shop for clothes when I am abroad. But you can’t really call them indulgences. I just bought myself a house and a new car. These are the most expensive things that I have bought so far.

Rajeev Masand: You and Kareena like going on holidays. So are these your occasional breaks?

Shahid Kapur: We have just started taking holidays together. When you work all the time, you end up getting no time for yourself. And then you ask yourself why am I working at all? So, going on a holiday is something that I really love. I have decided to take at least a month off for every year to just go away and spend time with my self.

In the past three years I have worked everyday, but what are the memories that I have created in this time? I need something to look back on when I reach a certain age. It is going to be those memorable holidays that I will look back on.

I just went on a holiday with my family and when I look at those photographs, it really brings a smile on my face. That is what memories are all about.

Rajeev Masand: What are the kind of holidays that you like? Do you like adventure sports, peace, big cities or the countryside? What do you look for in a holiday?

Shahid Kapur: I want to tour the whole world. So you have to choose activities depending upon where you are going. If you are going to South Africa, you will go on safaris and see a lot of wild life. Australia offers you a lot of water sports. If you are somewhere in Europe, Austria or England, you will be spending most of your time indoors.

Rajeev Masand: So, what has been your favourite holiday so far?

Shahid Kapur: I just went on a holiday with my family to Switzerland, London, Vienna and Austria. I loved it more because I was being with my family.

Rajeev Masand: You are a vegetarian. So, did you face a lot of difficulty there?

Shahid Kapur: I did face some problem. But we stayed in a self-serve apartment where we had this little kitchen where we cooked for ourselves. That was really nice. These days it’s really amazing that you get Indian food in almost every part of the world. You get a lot of vegetarian stuff abroad now.

Rajeev Masand: Do you get bothered by crowds when they recognize you?

Shahid Kapur: Not much. I guess when you are so far away from home you don’t really mind getting recognized once in a while. It feels nice sometimes.

Rajeev Masand: Are you in touch with the people you grew up with?

Shahid Kapur: Not many. But I am in touch with some of my school and college friends. The nature of this profession is such that it just takes over your life. It’s not like being in a nine-to-five office job where you come back from office and then you have time for your self.

DevilEyez

Here you finish shooting, go for dubbing, come back give an interview and there you have to go to listen to a script. Whatever little time you get, you would rather spend that with your family. So that does limits your social life to a great extent.

Rajeev Masand: So who are your friends? Who do you call friends now?

Shahid Kapur: I have this friend called Rohit. We both gelled so well because both of us wanted to get into films. He wanted to be a director and I had wanted to be an actor. We were both struggling at that time. I remember we used to sit together in a coffee shop and used to make future plans discussing when he becomes a director, what role would he give me in his film.

By god’s grace he is going to be directing a film very soon. But lets see if he would ever have any role that I would fit into.

Then there is this guy called Sri Ram in Delhi. My grandparents lived in Patparganj area of east Delhi and this guy was staying in the same building. We used to spend a lot of time together, and we still are in touch with each other.

Rajeev Masand: What about filmi friends?

Shahid Kapur: I do have friends from the film fraternity as well. But they are people who you meet more at social gatherings only. There is hardly anyone that I can call a dear friend in the film industry as yet. I have just started interacting with people and making best buddies takes time.

Rajeev Masand: Finally Shahid, what is the best thing about being a star?

Shahid Kapur: I love films and I love acting. Many a times people are not able to do what actually is their passion. I find myself very fortunate that I have got to do what I loved so early in life. This is what gives me the greatest kick.

Shahid Kapoor overcomes vertigo and cycles off the 16th floor of a building in Dubai while shooting for his next, Fool and Final

Kunal M Shah

Call it being brave or foolhardy. Shahid Kapoor, apparently, doesn't need a stunt double. Recently, while filming for Ahmed Khan's forthcoming film, Fool And Final, the actor slid down the 16th floor of a building on a long cloth that stretched to the ground. Incidentally, the actor chucked his fear of heights (vertigo) and went ahead with the dare-devil stunt.

After playing a homely lover in his latest release Vivah, Shahid will now be seen as a trendy city-slicker who sports a BMX cycle in Fool and Final. Shahid rides this expensive cycle throughout the film.

* I agree that sliding down the 16th floor to the ground was a bit difficult but we got the shot right in 4-5 takes — Shahid Kapoor

Director Ahmed Khan says, "Yes, it's true and it was an amazing scene. Amin was the stunt director. I know Shahid for 17 years now and he's a very close friend. At first I was scared and did not want to see him do the stunt. But then I gathered courage and shot the scene. The entire credit goes to him for attempting such a huge stunt scene on the BMX cycle." Khan states that the BMX is one of the costliest brands of cycles used for stunt scenes. "Shahid looked really good riding the BMX cycle. He gave five takes to get the scene right inspite of having vertigo. There's a chase scene where a Hummer is tailing him all over Dubai city and that is followed by this stunt scene." Of course, all necessary safety precautions were taken for the shot.

Shahid says, "Yes, it was cool to do the stunt. I think Fool And Final is a really hip film for me, especially after Vivah. I agree that sliding down the 16th floor to the ground was a bit difficult but we got the shot right in four or five takes."

As far as the BMX cycle goes, he says, "I had no time riding the cycle before the shoot. But once the shooting began, I was pretty comfortable riding it and I spent as much time as possible on the cycle while on ground."

Ahmed finally says, "The ease with which Shahid agreed to do this stunt is a clear indication of the star in him." The film also stars Sunny Deol, Vivek Oberoi and Ayesha Takia.

Shahid’s a film buff

mid day

Shahid Kapoor loves watching films in his spare time. And a little birdie tells us that both he and Kareena watch all the latest releases at Fame every Friday. Ask him about his passion for films and he says, “When I am at home, I am either reading scripts or watching DVDs.

The latest film I saw was Satyajit Ray’s Charulata. It’s a very sweet film and I enjoyed it.”

Since it’s a Bengali film, he watched it with the sub-titles on. “It doesn’t matter what the language is as one can understand the film. Also, Bengali is not a difficult language to understand.”

Priyanka, Koena to jam with Nelly Furtado!
By: Sandipan Dalal
December 9, 2006
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Promiscuous gal: Nelly Furtado No time to rehearse: Priyanka Chopra Waiting to exhale: Koena Mitra

Grammy Award-winning American popstrel Nelly Furtado will be performing in Mumbai for a music concert on December 31. And guess who’s going to be sharing the same stage as her? We’ve got confirmation that a bunch of B-town celebs, including Priyanka Chopra, Koena Mitra and Shahid Kapoor will be Nelly’s opening act on New Year’s Eve.
What’s more A R Rahman too will be performing along with Canadian-based desi band Josh (who are instrumental in bringing the singer to India).

Joshila jugalbandi

The Bolly junta will dance to a set of popular filmi numbers. Says Koena, “I’m performing to five of my favourite songs, including the latest tracks from Apna Sapna Money Money.” This will be followed by a jam session between the other performers, except for A R Rahman. He has been reserved for the grand finale.

Says Priyanka, “Unfortunately, I haven’t met Nelly and will see her only on stage. I’m going to be travelling to South Africa for God Tussi Great Ho, after which I will head to Prague to shoot for Drona. I don’t even have the time for technical rehearsals.”

Miss Piggy Chops is such a big fan of the international artiste that she even has her songs as her mobile’s caller tune. She says, “Promiscuous is my current favourite. In fact, I had the track I’m like a bird for the longest time.”

For Koena, however, the jamming session with Nelly is the big draw. “I’m so used to doing solo shows. It’s rare to share the stage with fellow colleagues. I’m equally excited as it’s a Nelly Furtado concert.”

Why not, Shahid?

The Bolly beauties have no qualms about working on the New Year’s Eve either. “This is the first time I’m working on New Year’s Eve,” says Priyanka. “In the past, I’ve only shot for a couple of hours in the day and then rushed back home to be with family. This time around, I’m going to usher in the New Year with thousands of people. It’s going to be a wonderful experience,” she says.

On the other hand, Koena says, “Seeing the pop diva belting out numbers beside me is going to be quite an exciting experience.”

Meanwhile, a hesitant Shahid Kapur refused to divulge whether he was doing the concert or not. A source close to him says, “He is in talks with them. and yet to finalise his participation.”

Shahid readies for the Maneater

By: Upala KBR
December 19, 2006
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shahid Kapur
Shahid Kapur will be performing with Nelly Furtado on December 31 as a part of the Nokia New Year’s Eve concert. The actor who is just back after a holiday in Singapore and a show in Bali, talks about his excitement about grooving with the Grammy Award winner.

How did the Nelly Furtado show happen? Says Shahid, “A couple of months ago, I got a call from the organisers but I was unsure since I have never performed on New Year’s Eve.

It’s a time which has always been reserved for my family. I have always been very particular about my family life and have always given them priority. I found out that the show was going to end at 12.05 am sharp and the venue is Andheri Sports Complex, which is close to where I stay.

Then I checked with my family who said I should go ahead as I was going to perform with an international artiste and I agreed.”

Fusion’s the word

Is the actor apprehensive about performing with an international performer? “No. I am very excited. This time I have got loads of time to rehearse. It’s a good break to get. It’s the first thing I have signed after Vivah. I love dancing on stage but it’s very important that when you are dancing with an international artiste your dancing too should be of that standard. I have grown on international music while I was working with Shiamak Davar and his dance troupe and Nelly is one of my favourite singers,” informs Kapur.

Has Shahid decided on what he’s going to perform and his look? “It’s an interesting fusion. So the songs will definitely be Bollywood, which is what we represent. It will be an amalgamation of international and Bollywood music.”

Love ke liye

Shahid’s just returned from a show in Bali with ladylove Kareena. Akshay and Lara and also enjoyed a holiday with Bebo in Singapore. “Yes, but it was a brief one — only for two days — as we both had commitments to keep, back in Mumbai. The last time, Bebo and I had been to Singapore, was for IIFA and we hardly had any time for going around. So this time around it was better.”

According to trade circles Vivah has been declared a success. “It’s strange, but with Vivah, people’s perception about me has changed as it was a solo hero, performance-oriented film.

After Ishq Vishk, it’s Vivah that has given me satisfaction. My character was a nice one — what he did in the end was a noble thing to do.” Would Shahid emulate his character in real life? “It’s a very difficult thing to comment about. But yes, if you truly love someone and want to spend the rest of your life with her, then you have to stand by that person,” concludes the actor.

Shahid Kapur: “Please stop comparing me to super stars like Shah Rukh & Salman… It puts a lot of pressure on me.”
MADHUREETA MUKHERJEE
http://images.photogallery.indiatimes.com/images/spacer.gif
INDIATIMES MOVIES

He’s tinsel ville’s most adored chocolate hero. And women of course love men with that boyish-babyish touch. Soft on the exterior, but rock solid within. That’s Shahid Kapur for you. Recently there was a lot of speculation on whether he’ll live up to the name ‘Prem’ that’s been epitomized by Salman Khan. Even Sooraj Barjatya went on to say...”Salman in my ultimate Prem”. How did that make him feel? Insecure? “Not at all. I have grown up watching Salman’s Maine Pyar Kiya and Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, and there’s no denying that he is the original Prem. There is no replacement for the original Prem - Salman. Soorajji chose me for the role in Vivaah because he needed someone in the twenties,” he clarifies.

He’s young, vibrant, and talented alright. But there’s a hitch. He looks younger than most girls in the industry, and filmmakers face a casting ‘ouch’ because of this. Sporting his affable grin he says, “My directors often come kicking me, and say, ‘Okay now we have cast you...where do we get a heroine?’ I guess things have a way of working out. I let my directors’ stress about that, I have done nine films and we’ve managed somehow, I guess we will manage in the future too. I am sure new girls will be coming in to the industry, and who knows....they can launch with me. There is a slight problem out there but the casting falls in to place.”

DevilEyez
12-25-2006, 05:07 PM
He’s known to be a stickler for perfection. Doesn’t that offend the others around? “I don’t know why people add these tags to me. I think everyone tries to give their best shot. Aren’t we here to do a great job of what we’ve been asked to do? Aren’t we here to better ourselves?” he stresses.

Right! Shahid can’t afford to be anything short of the best, because his toughest critic is waiting for him back home. “My Dad (actor Pankaj Kapur) is very critical of my work. After most of my films he looks at me and says – ‘What exactly are you doing? What are these films about?’ Being an actor of such high caliber, he has very high expectations of me, so when he watches me doing stuff that’s not up to the mark, he’s disappointed. He is right whenever he says it, a lot of times I don’t agree with him immediately, but when I look back I say to myself – Yes, Dad was right. But when he sees some good work, he’s very encouraging too. Of course, I have a long way to go before Dad can look at my work and say...”Wow!” says Kapur lad, at this modest best.

We heard he’s become very choosy about his roles and...before we finish, he interrupts, ‘No, not choosy. have become patient. I realized that in the last three years I made a few mistakes as far as choosing the right scripts are concerned. I want to be wary now.”

At the start of his career he was touted as the next Shah Rukh Khan. Now that he’s stepped in to Salman’s shoes (playing Prem in Vivaah ), comparisons with this Khan must be hounding him. “Please stop comparing me to such big super stars like Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan. It puts a lot of pressure on me. I’m very new and I’m very young. I am lucky to be where I am. It is very unfair; it puts them down when they are compared to me, they have worked hard over a long period of time to be where they are. I would like to create an own little place for myself as Shahid Kapur...and not as the ‘next someone else’. That’s what I am striving for. Nobody can take their place and I don’t intend do. I just want to be in my space,” reiterated Shahid.

We see a big star in the making. Sure the superstars would agree too.

Saturday January 6, 02:18 PM Shahid to perform despite neck sprain
By Subhash K. Jha, Indo-Asian News Service

3912

Mumbai, Jan 6 (IANS) Actor Shahid Kapoor sprained his neck badly while exercising at the gym a couple of days ago, but is all set to do a dangerous act at an awards function.

'I can neither turn left nor right. At least it's helping me see straight,' he jokes.

'Getting injured during a shot or while exercising is no big deal. That wouldn't have been much of a problem since I'm not working these days. Some rest ... and I'd have been okay. But there's a problem ... I've to dance, and dance fairly vigorously at an awards night over the weekend,' Shahid told IANS.

Shahid's elaborate act requires him to be brought on stage in a harness doing a 45-degree turn. The doctors have advised the actor against it.

'But a commitment is a commitment and I can't back out. I'm taking injections and undergoing vigorous physiotherapy. I'll take pain-killer injections and go on stage,' says Shahid, who has just received the first best-actor nomination for the year in 'Vivah'.

'Now that's a performance I am really proud of. It didn't require me to do any bravura. If it still got me noticed, I must be doing something right.'

Shahid, Vidya in Aziz Mirza's next
By: Upala KBR
January 13, 2007

Shahid Kapoor Vidya Balan

Aziz Mirza is getting ready to launch his next film, an untitled venture starring Shahid Kapoor and Vidya Balan. This marks his return to direction after three years since Chalte Chalte (2003), which was a hit.

Last year, Mirza was all set to launch two films. One was a Hindi-English bilingual based on immigrants in the US and the problems they faced. The other was a Hindi quickie. He has put those films on hold.

When contacted, Aziz Mirza says, “Yes I have signed Shahid and Vidya but it’s too early to talk about it. The making of a film depends on many factors and everything going well. I should be launching my film shortly.”

Personal tragedy

Why is he directing a film after such a long time? “I was keeping to myself and taking time to accept a highly personal situation (his wife, Nirmala’s death). We had been together 45 years, had grown up together, known each other through school and college so even now I find it difficult to accept it.”

Shahid Kapoor says, “I am doing Azizji’s next and am looking forward to working with him and Vidya.” Adds a source close to him, “Shahid is very excited about working in this project as it’s a romantic comedy along the lines of Chalte Chalte and Yes Boss, a genre Shahid loves.

The film is set abroad. Shahid’s a great admirer of Azizji’s work who has directed successful films like Chalte Chalte, Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman and Yes Boss in the past. It’s a feel-good film and should start by April this year.”

All That Glittered...

Anecdotes from the green-room...
January 6, 2007... Saturday...It was a red-letter day for Screen. It wasn’t just our golden lady who was being unveiled, for the 13th time, but also our rejuvenated trade weekly that over the last 56 years has grown steadily in stature to become the Bible of the film fraternity. Today, as you can see, Screen is bigger... and brighter. And it is still the last word in infotainment. And that was perhaps why we were able to persuade Union Information & Broadcasting Minister, Priyaranjan Das Munshi, and the Maharashtra Chief Minister, Vilasrao Deshmukh to do the honours and launch our new-look broadsheet along with Editor-in-Chief and CEO of The Indian Express Group Shekhar Gupta. It’s truly a new beginning for us in the New Year with resolutions galore ...

One of those resolutions was to come up with yet another chart-topper. Last year with TRPs as high as 9.6, the Hero Honda-sponsored Star Screen Awards had undoubtedly been the Television Event of the Year. We knew expectations would be sky-high and were prepared for endless brain-storming. But surprisingly, a lot of things fell into place at the first meeting itself. With comedy keeping the cash counters jingling at the box-office through the last 12 months and our own super success still fresh in our minds, we knew we wanted the Laughter Challenge team back in the spotlight. But time constraints demanded that we prune down our ha-ha-anchors from four to two. And there was little debate on the can’t-do-without duo: It had to be Raju Shrivastav and Navin Prabhakar. The Kings of Comedy were such a riot that the day after, when I called up office, I was accosted on the line by our telephone operator who had loved our show ... And Gajodhar bhaiya and Julie bar girl best of all...Can we dare believe that we’ve found the mantra to success that has been eluding so many of our dream-catchers for so long?

Keeping Raju and Navin company on stage were two lovely ladies—Minissha Lamba and Isha Koppikar. Minissha’s fragile beauty can literally bring the dead to life. Isha we’d been in talks with for the last two years and soon after Don hit the theatres, she walked into our script with a magic remote and the sweet seduction of ‘Aaj ki raat ... ’.

Isha’s only grouse was that our D-day came too early in the new year and slogging was doubly hard when the hangover has still to clear. We could empathise with our dancing doll but well, we had to admit that the air-of-revelry only added to the madhoshi, especially when we had Bipasha Basu flirting with our senses. It was a rather sweet sight to see her steady beau make an early entry, heading straight for Bipasha’s mobile trailer just before her act, wanting to steady shaky nerves though his “girl” herself was in high spirits. John Abraham was running a high temperature and clearly low, but that did not stop him from sitting besides Bipasha, out in the public eye, once she was done with her star act. For this much-in-love couple love clearly means... being there for each other.

That’s obviously Shahid and Kareena Kapoor’s pyaar ka superhit formula too. The cute twosome are rarely far away from each other these days. And since they were performing on the same stage, they turned up for rehearsals together and alternatively assessed each other’s performances.

It was our “creative brain” Mohammad Morani who came up with the idea of having a star swing on a sloping ramp. He promised that it would be a definite show-stopper. But who had the agility and audacity to pull off such a stunt? We could come up with only one name ...Shahid Kapoor. Every woman’s dream lover after Vivah, Shahid who has been a part of Shamiak Davar’s troupe, gave expression to Mohammad’s dream.

Just before Shahid was to go on stage, Kareena wandered into the green-room and sat back to watched her boyfriend on a 32-inch telly. Oblivious to the knowing smiles, she had her eyes peeled on the screen through the seven-minute medley, a buttoned-up black greatcoat-cum-gown covering up her little golden dress. The velvet sheath came off a half-hour later when Kareena herself zoomed on to centerstage in a spiffy red car for her Don dhamakedaar act. And hearts melted when we spotted Shahid balanced on some crates backstage, watching his Bebo on TV. For this winsome-twosome love obviously means ... sharing moments.

Shahid finds the perfect script

Friday, January 19, 2007: (Mumbai):

4062

After taking a hiatus from his performance in the much adored Vivah, Shahid had been looking for the perfect script until he stumbled upon Aziz Mirza’s project! Shahid is nothing but thrilled to be doing a romantic musical with a director of Mirza’s calibre.

After almost six months of sitting at home, Shahid finally bagged a project that will add a tremendous weightage to his career graph.

After Vivah, the actor was very firm on his decision of not doing another film until and unless the script is perfect. Little did he know that he would be offered a role by one of the finest directors in India!

Shahid absolutely loved the idea behind Aziz Mirza’s script. He was especially excited because the character offered is something he has never played before.

Aziz Mirza, whose usual cast included none other than the King Khan in movies like Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, Yes Boss, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani and Chalte Chalte, has now decided to direct Shahid Kapoor.

Shahid, in turn, feels great to be doing a film with a director who has worked with Shah Rukh Khan. The musical will also star Vidya Balan. (Source: Indiafm)

Kareena hitting a career high: Shahid
By Subhash K. Jha, Indo-Asian News Service 4131

Mumbai, Jan 31 (IANS) Shahid Kapoor, who is yet to find the right project after 'Vivah', says girlfriend Kareena Kapoor is hitting the best time of her career now and from this year on both will focus only on quality films.

Asked about his wish list for himself and Kareena in 2007, he told IANS: 'I'd like to do good work and balance out my personal life with my work. Kareena is hitting the best time of her career now.

'I think quality has become far more important today than it was earlier because one successful film, no matter how small, is in the eye of the audience. Neither Kareena nor I can get away with doing bad work.'

Shahid is still searching for a good project to take up after 'Vivah'.

'I'd be happy picking any script that has mass appeal. No point in giving a good performance in a film that nobody watches. Luckily, films like 'Rang De Basanti' or even 'Vivah' have broken the mould.

'In fact, both Kareena and I have taken a deliberate decision to cut loose completely and start with a clean slate. Today she's doing a Mani Ratnam film. Every actor in the industry wants to work with Mani sir. She has been very patient, hasn't worked for eight to nine months. That's tougher on a leading lady than a hero. I'm so happy that her decision to be patient has paid off. I hope it pays off for me.'

Will Shahid be in Sooraj Barjatya's next film? 'I've my finger crossed. I'd do anything to work with him again. I was lucky 'Vivah' did well. It gave me the confidence to hold out. 'Vivah' has put me in a position to be patient. It was time for me to move to another level.

'I've been patient. I did get scared when I got up workless. But now I'm comfortable connecting with myself, listening to scripts and watching as many films as possible.'

He also has happy memories of meeting singer Nelly Furtado backstage before a show Dec 31.

'I was aware that Nelly and I wouldn't be able to do an act together. We were all so stressed-out about our acts. Nelly had her own act ready from beforehand.

'I told her how much I loved her 'Powerless' track. She surprised me by telling me she remembered meeting me and Kareena on a flight sometime back. I was quite touched and taken aback that she actually remembered that. I'd have liked to dance with Nelly. But she had barely landed barely 24 hours earlier.'

Kareena wasn't there to cheer Shahid at the event. 'She watched me on television from home. I preferred her to be with her family. It wasn't such a big event that I'd want her to be there for me.'

But it was Shahid's first live performance in Mumbai. 'Since I'm not doing any movies right now I had the time to rehearse. In any case I don't like going on stage until I'm fully prepared. The best part of the evening was the interaction with the live audience.

'Earlier this year I had gone on my first world tour. That's when I realised how heady the whole experience of a live performance can be. This was like 20 minutes away from my home. So it felt like 'apne ghar ki baat'. The turnout was damn good...9,000 people. The standing cheering crowd was very MTV-style.

'That's only possible for an event like New Year's Eve. To add to my excitement, this was my first performance in India and that too before a live crowd. Of course, I've performed at awards functions. But never outside.'

Shahid had a good time. 'Bringing in 2007 while I was at work was a good thing. I haven't been working for two months. It felt good to be working again.'

Foolish, finally http://www.mumbaimirror.com/net/images/ratings/3.gif
Ahmed Khan tried to shoot for Fool and Final on a busy bridge in Dubai, without permission. And ended up getting his executive producer put behinds bars

Debutant director Ahmed Khan is yet to recover from the shock of almost getting arrested in Dubai for violating traffic laws. The director, who wanted to shoot a song sequence for his forthcoming film Fool And Final in Dubai, decided to set up an orchestra right in the middle of the Al Maktoum Bridge, which is considered the second busiest bridge in the world.

http://cms.mumbaimirror.com/portalfiles/1/30/200702/Image/040207/Ent_3.jpg Shahid Kapoor on the Al Maktoum bridge in Dubai The sequence demanded Shahid Kapoor and Ayesha Takia, dressed in school uniforms, to enjoy themselves. It required a high level of energy and Ahmed felt that only the Al Maktoum bridge would lend that zing to the shot.

Although producer Feroz Nadiadwala instructed Ahmed to take permission from the authorities, the director didn't bother to do so, assuming they would wind up in 10 minutes. "I was certainly not expecting any issue to crop up during the shoot," says Ahmed.

There was very little time to set up the entire scene in the middle of the bridge and Ahmed even asked Shahid and Ayesha to help out. "They both were very co-operative and helped my technicians to carry the equipment. We set up a stage in five minutes and started shooting the song. The problem was, it was rush hour and the bridge was jammed-packed. Due to this disruption caused by the shoot, one local rammed his car into another and there was a huge commotion," says Ahmed.

In a matter of seconds, cops came streaming in and ordered them to stop immediately or face the consequences – arrest. But Ahmed wanted to complete shooting the scene at any cost and asked his production person from Dubai to keep the cops engaged in conversation for a while. "My producer was reasoning with the cops that we had to shoot for just 10 minutes and did not intend disrupting traffic. While the producer was busy diverting the cops' attention, I was busy shooting the scene. http://cms.mumbaimirror.com/portalfiles/1/30/200702/Image/040207/Ent_6.jpg Ahmed Khan As soon as we finished, (they took 20 minutes to wind up), we dismantled the stage and ran from the location. My executive producer was arrested and put behind bars for a day. But producer Feroz Nadidawala bailed him out and now everything has been sorted out," he says.

Ahmed is feeling guilty about the executive producer's arrest. "Both Shahid and I thought that we would manage to shoot the scene quickly and pack up, but we didn't anticipate an accident, hence the delay," says Ahmed.

Shahid and Vidya- age matters?
By IndiaFM News Bureau

Shaid Kapoor and Vidya Balan are one of the best performers in our industry. Bring them together and you are sure to see the screen go on fire.

But Aziz Mirza begs to differ. He recently shot with the two actors for a photo shoot for his forthcoming film, but unfortunately when he had a look at the photos he was shocked to see that there was a noticeable age difference between the two actors. Eventually to fill the age gap between the two, the director did find a way out. He changed Vidya's character around and made her older than Shahid in the film too! It comes as no surprise to be seeing a young man dating an older woman on screen - take for instance movies like Dil Chahta Hai and Ek Chotti Si Love Story... but to change the script in accordance with the actors' look?

Now let us just hope that this new twist in the tale works well for Mirza's venture.

The Right Choice

He’s sprung back into the reckoning with Sooraj Barjatya’s surprise hit Vivah that’s taken him into worlds that he did not even know existed. Still, Shahid Kapoor’s in no hurry to return to the studios. Picky and choosy even when it comes to endorsements, he’s created a quality control for himself.
And as he patiently waits for the “right” films to come along, he’s making plans for his birthday and Valentine’s Day

Vivah has gone from strength to strength and as it races towards a 100-day run what are the thoughts uppermost in the mind of Sooraj Barjatya’s newest Prem considering you were always pretty confident that it would be a turning point in your career?
Vivah was an honest film and everyone who was a part of it, led by Soorajji himself, worked really hard. Soorajji is a director who creates a world of his own and it’s important for him that every actor is comfortable in that space. He will go to any lengths from spending two hours on a shot to explaining individualy to 20 actors on the set, what happened before and what will come next so they can “live” the moment. I was very sure such sincerity would not go unacknowledged.
Not many shared your optimism though.
Yeah, soon after the promos went on air I was deluged with complaints about how the visuals were too simple and the music not contemporary. After its release several critics panned it as “regressive” but the audience’s reaction has proved that Vivah is not the look or the music score that decides whether a film is progressive or regressive. Maybe Vivah did not boast of the obvious trappings of glamour like expensive locations and extravagant sets but in the end it is the story and the performances that hold you...The message that remains with you. The last 20 minutes elevated this simple film. On Soorajji’s instructions I’d made a deliberate effort to play down Prem so his momentous decision to marry a girl who’s gone through a major mishap that has left her physically scarred, comes as not just a surprise to the viewer but also makes a bigger impact given his youth, his quiet, introverted nature and lack of worldly experience. At a time when life is becoming increasingly frivolous, Vivah, by returning us to our culture and reminding us of the need for commitment in a relationship, has struck a chord.
After Vivah your fan-mail must have doubled...Tripled...
(Smiling) I now have a new set of fans. Earlier, my films worked in metros, multiplexes and with youngsters. Vivah’s helped me reach out to families. While I was on a promotional tour with Soorajji, in the course of many telephonic conversations I had older ladies fondly reminiscing about their courtship days with me. Even my driver recalled how soon after his rishta had been fixed by his parents, he had quietly called his fiancee to the terrace so they could spend some time together, alone. Vivah’s taken me to places whose names come as a surprise when I read them in the trade magazines, because I did not know they even existed. Soorajji has a very loyal fan following, especially in small towns where people still live in joint families and are very proud, even protective, of the values projected in his films. Vivah is the kind of film they want him to make because it strengthens their conviction in how life should be lived.
Has Vivah changed your definition of love?
May be not the definition but it’s certainly made me realise the seriousness of intent...the commitment...that comes along with the feeling. Soorajji’s films highlight those small moments that make a relationship beautiful. I’ve realised too that it’s not the big things that make a difference but the little touches that make love precious.
So what plans have you made for Valentine’s Day?
(Laughing) Honestly, none, yet. Valentine’s Day is a beautiful concept but you don’t have to wait for February 14 to celebrate. When you are in love everyday is Valentine’s Day.
But you have made plans for your birthday?
Well yes, it will be a family occasion in Bangkok. Kareena and I were there earlier together and we had a good time.
You’re not going back to see the Golden Buddha or the Emerald Buddha or...
No, that’s not why we’re going back. We can only take four days off and since Bangkok is close by it seemed a good choice. (With a grin) It was pretty much Kareena’s decision and frankly I think it’s the cheap shopping that’s the big attraction.
It’s been 13 weeks since Vivah hit the theares and you’re still chilling out at home. What are you holding out for—banners, solo hero projects, big bucks...
(Shaking his head) Only good scripts...Good roles...In the last four years I’ve been fortunate to have worked with makers like John Matthew Mathan, Abbas-Mustan, Priyadarshan and Sooraj R.Barjatya. They’ve made me realise that only I can create a quality-control for myself. When you work around-the-clock you get used to working as opposed to doing the kind of work that you want to do. I’m dying to get back to the studios. I’m happiest when on the sets. But I don’t want to go back just for the heck of shooting. It should be a film worth doing.
Like Aziz Mirza’s next?
I’ve always loved Aziz uncle’s films and this one is a cute combination of romance and comedy. It’s a young, feel-good love story in the genre of Ishq Vishk and I’m very happy with the character I’m playing. There’s an element of novelty in the script which is very important today. If you review the films that worked last year you’ll see that all of them had a certain refreshing freshness...
One of them was Vivah that fetched you a Screen Award nomination in the Best Actor category. Are you disappointed that you lost out on the coveted award for the second year running?
I bagged the Best Debut Award, didn’t I? And I’m only 25. I’m sure there will be many more opportunities to come up with performances that merit the honour. It’s enough for now that my name features in the elite list with actors I’ve grown up watching, some since I was in school.
So you weren’t nervous on the night of January 6?
Not for myself, because I wasn’t expecting to win. But I was praying for Kareena because Omkara was a special film for her and I knew how much she had put into the performance. It’s not easy for an actor from whom you’ve come to expect glamour, to do away with all the usual support systems like huge sets, a hip wardrobe and perfect make-up, and play a character like Dolly with so much conviction. It’s the kind of challenge actors who are past their prime and nearing retirement take up, but Kareena’s still in the thick of things and has been experimenting with such off-beat roles be it Refugee, Yuva or Chameli since the beginning of her career. She’s a clean-hearted, emotional girl who’s very passionate about her work and an actor of high calibre. Unfortunately, she’s had few roles that have exploited her potential. In the circumstances, Omkara was a milestone.
So you thought she stood a good chance of bagging the Best Actor (Female) Award?
I believe a Best Actor performance should be rated on quality rather than commercial standing and unlike other award functions, Screen has always ranked performance over popularity. So yes, I was confident she stood a chance at the Screen Awards.
There’s talk of Sanjay Dutt and Sanjay Gupta wanting to remake Chashme-Buddor with you and Kareena?
Yes, we were approached. I think they’re working on the script now before getting back to us again.
Are there any other films in the pipeline?
There are a few films I’m zeroing in on but till I’ve signed the dotted line it would be presumptious to talk of them.
What about TV? Your father Pankaj Kapur is returning in and as Karamchand.
I’m always game for experimenting. I have age on my side so I’d like to attempt anything and everything, from love stories to family dramas, from musicals to negative roles, then leave it to the people to decide what they like to see me in. If there’s something on TV that suits me, that I can carry off well, why not?
So can we hope to see you on KBC’s Hot Seat?
I don’t know, I’m not too good with quiz shows. If the questions are related to cinema may be I could answer a few but my knowledge in other areas is somewhat limited. But I’ve enjoyed watching the first and second episodes of the new KBC with Shah Rukh Khan as the anchor.
Kareena and you have had Koffee...with Karan recently.
Yeah, and I appreciated the fact that Karan was really thoughtful, not asking me questions that would have made me uncomfortable. He’s a very dear friend of Kareena and I’ve been meeting him often at social occasions and for quiet dinners. Koffee With Karan was like an informal chat. There’s so much of affection between Karan and Kareena that it was nice just sitting there and listening in.
One can understand you waiting for the right film to come along but in the interim one would have expected you to do more shows and grab some ads, thereby making a quick buck?
I’m open to shows but I’m being picky-choosy about endorsements. I am 25 and I want to be around for the next 15 years. I believe that if an actor is seen everyday on TV why would people spend good money to go watch him on the big screen? It’s important that you maintain some amount of exclusivity. (With a grin) Of course, there are several bigger stars out there who have proved this theory wrong. You see them everywhere, everyday, and still want more of them.

"When you are in love everyday is Valentine's Day" - Shahid Kapoor
