Best things in Life are Free
There is never any doubt that
the best things in life are free and I believe these will remain free
for as long as humanity let these be……………………………………… One of the best things in life is a smile and without a doubt Shahrukh khan has one of the best smiles in the world and his fans know it too. After the interview I did with Shahrukh Khan a while back I started getting e-mails on a fairly regular basis from various people to get to know more about him, and believe me there is a great deal more to him than few interview questions
This way without asking any intrusive questions and having a time deadline I would just write about what it’s like to be spending time with SRK as a friend. It became a very exciting idea
and over SRK’ s last three trips to London I was lucky enough to spend
some quality time with a quality friend on his last trip few days ago he
was in London for just over 24 hours and I spent more than 12 hours with
him and got to know him really really well. I bet you want to know what went on in these 12 hours, should I tell you? I think that’s a billion dollar question. But than again it would be very mean of me not to share such an incredible experience with the world who knows him and loves him. The King of Bollywood arrived at Heathrow Airport early morning and I was at the Airport to greet him he was so happy to see his friend after a long flight that instead of running to the place where he was staying he decided to stay with us and have a cup of coffee before going to have a little rest as he had a meeting early after noon for which he had especially arrived from Bombay. While having a cuppa early
morning at the Airport a constant stream of Fans kept on approaching him
and I could not believe it as to how much he cared for them and paid
attention to them young or old ,rich or poor , bold and bald he was
genuinely grateful for their attention After having a cuppa and a good
old chat he went to have some rest and we decided to join him in the
afternoon and this was to be a very exciting time being with SRK and
just 2 other friends and he was at his
So we met up in the afternoon at London’s very upmarket shopping place for the rich and famous “Harrods” in the heart of London’s Knightsbridge. I really thought that SRK probably would buy some clothes or stuff but first thing he asked when he went in was directions to the stationery department. Once in the Stationery & Books
department he became engrossed into looking for some specialist books
for himself, I was surprised to see so much interest and asked him why
books? when do you get time to read them? He just smiled with his
trademark broad smile and said “I make time for books” it gives me
pleasure to read and I also read to my children and find it extremely
rewarding when they ask so many questions, it gives me enormous pleasure
to read about different things, places and people and I love good love
stories. SRK does lots of research and reads up everything he could before taking up a role in any movie because he is a perfectionist and has setup very high standards for himself. So he finds out everything he can before he accepts the challenges for massive tasks like “Devdas”. He spent some time looking for things in various areas after he found all the books he could carry he looked at some fine Egyptian cotton bedding at Harrods and he loved the plain white smooth bed sheets and commented these are like a child so innocent , so loveable and very refreshing(what a beautiful way to express such a simple thing I though to myself) and me and being me I had to pass a comment “than they grow up to become brats” It made everybody laugh and Shahrukh Said “oh shahid bhai don’t be so negative” his comments showed how positive a person he is and how much faith he has in humanity. We slowly walked away while he was still holding that beautiful white cotton sheet it reminded me of a pure innocent woman…………if there is such a thing…………… Now now ladies don’t all hit me at once let me finish…………………………………..... I have always hated shopping and this was getting bit much for me so I suggested to everyone that we should grab a coffee in Harrods restaurant but we all ended up at a rather cosy and trendy café just outside Harrods sitting on an outside table. Now that was a fatal mistake because all the woman and men too were beginning to gather around to catch a glimpse of this amazing personality only draw back was none of them were interested to talk to us I still felt rather good cause we were very close to the centre of attraction. The amazing part was that it was not just Indians Or Pakistanis coming up to meet him there were Iranians ,many East Europeans ,English and Americans too and a rather large stream of Arab woman too whom were eyeing him through their Hijabs and going past us rather slowly……………………… wow what would I give to get that kind of attention …………………………but to SRK it was routine he did not get a big head or became pompous and that’s the best quality he has and that’s the quality I love about him, its his treatment of everyone equally. No matter who you are he will talk to you equally nicely and with respect and consideration, many a times young woman tried to grab him. (I did offer my arm in his place but the young woman would not budge) Eventually sitting there in open public place became too much so we got up and even though I insisted on paying the bill but SRK got to the waiter first.
Shahrukh being a techi (an IT Enthusiast) had to get some computer stuff too so we moved the cars towards one of the rather large computer shops where Shahrukh was telling me what’s the latest gadget on the market and what is he looking for, I was rather impressed with his knowledge, he could tell his Gigabytes from his SD-RAMS and his Hard-Disk from his PDA……..and in the mean time some GORA who was the computer shop expert spotted SRK and the on-slaught began but it was more civilised because its was a more of a mixture of 60-40 Goras to Desi’s . The store Manager (An Englishman) had seen SRK in “ASOKA” and was a fan already but crowd grew and grew and grew but once he is in a computer shop he does not care it was like being in Disneyworld he was moving from one gadget to another and in between making rather good looking girls very happy too.( I tried very hard to get some phone numbers but SRK discouraged me). While in the computer store one of their customers approached Shahrukh and told him about a friend of his a young woman suffering from cancer and asked if he would give her few minutes of his time. Shahrukh said yes of course I would and asked if we should go the lady’s house which was nearby but the gentleman who asked Shahrukh, told us the Lady is already on her way to the computer store to meet him( I could not believe it how quickly the word got around). Within few minutes that lady arrived at the doorsteps of the store and Shahrukh left everything and went straight to the door to greet this young lady who was not looking in good shape but was beaming with the biggest smile i have ever seen. Shahrukh hugged her and talked to her for a while away from the crowds and encouraged her and prayed for her and promised to keep in-touch with her and I thought for this act of kindness alone Shahrukh was the greatest person on earth. By now I had no doubt about Shahrukh being way above a normal human being I was really chuffed at his generosity and the attention he gave her. The lady walked away slowly but a permanent smile was on her face and she looked a perfect picture of happiness despite her enormous health problems. I could see tears in Shahrukh’s eyes” what a man I thought” Eventually computer shopping came to an end and we started making our way to the city and the place he was staying in. It was now time to eat and be merry but I was amazed as to how little he ate; now I knew why he was so slim and I was not. The night was still young so we sat around and chatted for couple of hours and I thoroughly enjoyed SRK,s exquisite style and wonderful sense of Humour. He is truly a gentle soul a man with a heart of gold. I feel privileged to have met him and spent time in his company.
